Biography

A versatile drummer and percussionist with experience in jazz, rock, Latin, and African rhythms, Carlos received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from The Florida State University in 2006.

As a professional musician, Mr. Duran has served as percussion accompanist for a variety of modern and African dance programs including those at The Ohio State University, The Florida State University, Dennison University, Kenyon College, and BalletMet.

For the past decade, Carlos has provided drum set and percussion instruction to a variety of students of all ages and performance levels out of his home studio, online, and at community music academies.

Mr. Duran has extensive performance experience with bands encompassing all genres of music. Currently, he is drummer and percussionist for Big Greedy, The New Onda Nueva, SoundTheWord, and Zancudo in the Central Ohio area.

In addition to his performance, accompaniment, and studio teaching experience, Carlos has served as guest music instructor for BalletMet's scholarship program "Discover Dance" and their outreach school-based programs "Wiggle Jig" and "Moving into Literacy."

Mr. Duran is founder of Drum It! LLC, a community-based group drumming program designed to promote health and well-being among people of all ages and walks of life.

Lessons

Mr. Duran is currently accepting new drum set students of all playing levels.

Depending on your desired focus and individual goals, lessons typically consist of:

  • Rudimental studies
  • Technique
  • Reading/writing music notation
  • Musical styles
  • Improvisation

Mr. Duran's student base consists of professional musicians exploring new styles; middle and high school students who take part in marching bands, concert bands, jazz bands, or are preparing for university school of music auditions; as well as amateur drummers seeking to improve their skills. Carlos' students have gone on to win state competitions as well as full scholarships to multiple music schools and conservatories across the nation.

Mr. Duran teaches lessons out of his home studio as well as online.

Session Work

Throughout his career, Mr. Duran has been part of many diverse recording sessions with artists in the United States and abroad.

As a studio musician, Carlos has been recorded performing on a variety of instruments including drum set, djembe, congas, cajon, bongos, bells, udu drum, and castanets.

Mr. Duran has the ability to be part of your recording project from the comforts of his home studio.

Dance Accompaniment

Carlos Duran has been accompanying dance for the last 10 years, beginning his career while still a music student at The Florida State University. Since, Carlos has accompanied numerous nationally renowned programs including the Department of Dance at The Ohio State University and BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Duran has worked with talented choreographers and dance teachers including Bebe Miller, Susan Hadley, Esther Baker-Tarpaga, Olivier Tarpaga, Jimmy Ortiz, and Rodney Brown. He has composed original music for various dance companies including the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and Seven Dance Company.

Over the last number of years, Carlos has had the privilege to work with outstanding dance accompanying musicians including Susan Chess and Elijah Palnik, who have continually inspired and enriched his musicianship.
